6/29/09 03:18 pm - Sketch-A-Thon 2009 at the SDCC needs artist

Hey all, I will be at the San Diego Comic-Con at the Cartoon Art Museum booth both working and drawing as well as out and about promoting myself for work.

The museum is still looking for artist to come and draw, here is the info. Why not come and help out:

The Cartoon Art Museum Sketch-A-Thon at San Diego Comic-Con needs your help!

San Diego Comic-Con International is fast approaching, and the Cartoon Art Museum needs your help! In order to raise funds and raise awareness of the Cartoon Art Museum, we’ll be hosting our second annual Sketch-A-Thon at this year’s Comic-Con.

We’re looking for artists to sit at our table for one-hour sessions, drawing sketches for Comic-Con attendees in exchange for donations to the Cartoon Art Museum. Past guest artists included Alison Bechdel, Tom Beland, Daryl Cagle, Rick Geary, Derek Kirk Kim, Keith Knight, Batton Lash, Steve Lieber and Eric Powell, among others, and we’re hoping to put together another all-star line-up for this year.  This year’s guest list already includes Marvel Comics artist & letterer Rick Parker, mini-comics creator Karen Luk and underground comix legend Bobby London, with more surprises to come.

Artists of all shapes, sizes and skill levels are welcome, so please don’t be intimidated by the list that I’ve posted. We’re hoping to have one veteran artist and one up-and-comer at the table at all times, which will allow the younger artists to learn from the older ones (and vice versa).

We set a new fundraising record at last year’s Comic-Con, and we’re hoping to top that total this year.

Thanks very much for your consideration. If you’re able to give some of your time at this year’s Comic-Con, please send me an e-mail and I’ll fill you in on the details and start working out a schedule. If you’ll be on-site but unable to leave your table and you’d still like to contribute a sketch or a signed book, please let me know and I’ll add you to our sign-up list.

Best,

5/10/09 12:25 pm - Updates 5-09

Hey all,

I have been pretty bad at posting here on LJ with my latest going on's.

- I am doing some production work for a graphic novel that will be coming out this winter.

- I donated some drawings to one of my favorite podcasts "The Show with Patrick" :

I am pleased to share with you a fan project that I had a small part in as part of Patrick Hurd's "the Show with Patrick" video podcast.

Here is the official press:

The Story of the Haunted Mansion.

You’ll learn how the wish of one man to provide a loving home for his family, became the nightmare that destroyed one generation after the next.

The 32 minute story is visualized through the art work of over 40 talented artists.

Nearly 300 original pieces of artwork were created exclusively for the story!

The short films voice cast includes actor Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser MD, How I Met Your Mother), Corey Burton (The Haunted Mansion Holiday’s Ghost Host), Peter Renaday (The Ghost Host from the classic 1969 Haunted Mansion LP), and voice guy extraordinaire Brian Sommer!

Find out how your favorite characters came to live and die inside Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion…and the surprising way their stories intertwine.

Visit the Window to the Magic video feed on iTunes on May 1 to download the high quality video for free…
The WindowtotheMagic Videocast (Standard Definition)

Or visit Patrick’s YouTube channel... http://www.youtube.com/user/Doombuggy

So you think you know all about the Haunted Mansion…You don’t know half the story!

The Story of the Haunted Mansion is a fan-fiction based on one of the great theme park attractions. The story is a 38:46 minute history of the famous house that now resides in Disneyland, Anaheim CA and contains the pictures of 40 artists. Mr. Hurd tapped the voices of Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser MD, How I Met Your Mother), Corey Burton (The Haunted Mansion Holiday’s Ghost Host, lots and lots of voices in all sorts of places), Peter Renaday (The Ghost Host from the classic 1969 Haunted Mansion LP, Henry from the Bear Country Jamboree), and Brian Sommer! The rest of the voice cast is made of fans of the attraction.

The story is based on the website Haunted Mansion Ghost Gallery Stories and fleshes out all our favorite spirits of the Haunted Mansion. Most the characters that appear in the animatronics, art, and effects from the ride are brought together to help give us a detailed history. The production is very slick with the music and voices along with the art. Fans of the ride will thoroughly enjoy the tale while some casual viewers might find it a bit long in detail, but inspiring by the spirit and energy that went into making it.

The art comes in multiple styles from artist who are also fans themselves and with ages that run from small children to grown adults. I am quite pleased with most of my work I produced, with the exception of a few pieces. Once in a while there will be descrpency in the work due to us not fully knowing how the art fit into the story (my drawings of Mary make her much older then the ones that came before it).

Congratulations to Patrick and everyone who worked on the project. I wonder what other fan projects might be inspired from this story.

Before the video podcast was ready, I made my own video of artwork to use last weekend at the Fremont Teen Comic and Anime Expo and have posted it on YouTube since it contains some art that was not used in Patrick's production.

Here are some of my favorite art I donated to the project, but you have to watch the video to see it all.

- 7:55 Ronald overlooking the river (one of my favorites)

- 10:29 Ronald goes mad.

- 13:35 Mary knows that her husband is cheating on her.

- 17:52 Party Guests

- 22:43 Mary walks the tightrope over the river

- 31:45 George leaves the world of the living

- See how I celebrated my big birthday in SF:

- How to play a looping video and a convention:

- A book I did production work on won the Publishers West Silver design Award. I did cover coloring and watercolor rendering on the prolog.

1/25/09 11:56 pm - 12x6 comic book challenge - session 1

Well today I stuck with my plan and did my first 12x6 Comic Challenge. The goal was to do a halved 24HCBD challenge with 12 pages in 12 hours instead. From 10:30 am to 10:30 pm.

As when I have tried it before, 12 pages in 12 hours seems harder to do then 24 pages in 24 hours...no idea why. I mostly got all the pages done with rough pencils, panel boarders and a bit of inking too. I am still trying to work with using a brush and ink. Keeping it low tech.

On a positive note I really like the direction the story is going. Still no idea of the full plot and the ending when I hit page 72.

To find out more, visit my blog...http://atomicbearpress.com/2009/01/25/12x6-comic-challenge-session-1-results/

10/20/08 03:08 pm - 24 Hour Comic Book Day follow-up

I have been so neglict at posting her on LJ that some of you might not know that I took the 24 Hour Comic Book Day challenge this weekend. It ran from 11am on Saturday Oct 18, 2008 to Sunday Oct 19 at 11 am. In the end I did not finish the comic (I didn't get the dialog written in).

To find out a full review, check out this blog post: http://atomicbearpress.com/2008/10/20/the-road-to-24-hour-comic-book-day-part-8-its-over/

I will be posting pages of the comic up on the web this week, so stay tunned.

8/1/08 03:22 pm - 50 Pirates art challenge

I am still on Vacation following the SDCC08. I have been trying hard to use my free time to draw and here is one of the challenges I gave myself. Draw 50 Pirates.

7/22/08 07:44 pm - Blood Bound Oath prologue tailer on YouTube

Artist Alexis E. Fajardo has posted his animated trailer for his graphic novel Kid Beowulf and the Blood Bound Oath. I did the watercolor rendering on the artwork and did the animation as well. Alexis will have the trailer playing on his DVD player at Comic-Con.

7/17/08 09:34 pm - CAM Sketch-A-Thon and the San Diego Comic-Con 2008

Thousands of artist, writers, fans, film makers, sculptors, actors and everyone else will be heading down to San Diego for the big San Diego Comic-Con. The convention is a week away (July 23-27, 2008) I will be found working the Cartoon Art Museum booth at MZ11 on the Mezzanine Level (the space in the back that you pass on your way upstairs to the sails pavilion and the panels

Last year it was a $10 donation for a 5.5 x 8.5" drawing and $25 for a 8.5"x 11"drawing (with exceptions for some big name artists). The museum will have one to two guest artist at the booth every hour generally from 12pm to 6pm everyday. You just come by and request a sketch and the before you know it you have a one of a kind piece of original art. The prices are great and it goes to a great cause. AND since our location is a bit hidden we need you folks to come by and say ‘Hi.”

There are still lots of open spots for more artist to come and help out by drawing, Just drop on by and set up a time to help out.
Now the big question is who is going to be drawing. Well some of the artist you know and some you do not, but they are really talented.

Some of the artist scheduled are: Alex Schumacher, Debbie Huey, Loraine Sammy, Josh Ellingson, Felix Kramer, Zach Weiner, Nicholas Ivan Ladendorf, Lisa Ann Wilson, Mike Gray, Doug Gray, Loraine Sammy, Catherine Smith, Mark Todd. Weshoyot Alvitre, Scott Sava, Mark Politi, Karen Luk, Dirk Tiede, Molly Hahn, Jesse Hamm, Tanya Roberts, Tamer Youssef, Ted Rall, Catherine Smith, Urian Brown, Brian Kolm, Mark Badger, Phil Foglio, Dan Piraro, Jon “Bean” Hastings, Keith Knight, Batton Lash, Molly Hahn, Karen Luk, Dirk Tiede, Katari Sporrong….and MORE.

7/13/08 11:33 am - Kid Beowulf and the Blood Bound Oath with my coloring...in print.

When I was in Santa Rosa last week I got my copies of Kid Beowulf and the Blood Bound Oath from author Alexis Fajardo and boy do they look sexy. The colors are rich and beautiful and printed with a satin finish, but also the character and title have a spot gloss, sort of like the First:Second books, and makes them really pop. I can't imagine people not noticing them at San Diego comic-con, they look amazing. The photos do not do them justice. The bottom photo is the prologue that I added some watercoloring too.

7/6/08 10:13 pm - I'm off to Santa Rosa to the Schulz Museum

This week I am in Santa Rosa CA to teach the animation class at the Schulz Museum. The class is brand new and hopefully it will result in some cool animations. If all goes according to plan I will have some video clips to show on-line the week after. I will be blogging later this week as well. I am also hoping I will get a chance to work on some projects that I have been behind on.

JULY 7–11 9am–12:30pm | Stop and Go!
Learn the basics of stop-motion animation and make your own animated film by the end of the week. Students will experiment with stop-motion and hand-drawn animation, flip books and zoetropes, as well as other methods. Taught by professional artist Brian Kolm.
COST: $152 for members; $190 for non-members

Here is a video clip from a class that has all ready happened, the Cartoon Safari that started with some drumming. Due to working with Children the clip can not be embedded. So click on the text below.

Students launch their “Cartoon Safari” week with a drumming session with South African musician Baba Shibambo. They spent the rest of the week creating cartoon creatures and stories with professional cartoonist Brian Narelle as part of our 2008 summer class session.

7/2/08 03:54 pm - Sketch-A-Thon at the San Diego Comic-Con!

-- Are you an artist is going to the San Diego Comic-Con?

-- Are you willing to donate an hour or so of your time to help the Cartoon Art Museum of San Francisco? (http://www.cartoonart.org)

If you answered yes to both of these questions you might be able to help the Museum as part of their fund raising Sketch-A-Thon at the Comic-Con. This will be the second annual Sketch-A-Thon the museum has done and last years was a huge success thanks to the help of both well known and up-and-coming artist. Last year we had Eric Powell, Alison Bechdel, Tom Beland and Keith Knight to name a few.

How it works: Artist are scheduled for a block of time, usually one hour to come to the booth and draw. On average the drawings cost $10 for 8.5" x 5.5" or $25 for 8.5" x 11". Sometimes you might be drawing a requested character for someone and sometimes you might be just adding drawings to our impressive selection. Sometimes the drawings do sell for more for certain well known artists.

This year your assistance and supported is needed more then ever since we were not able to get a booth on the actual main floor and are on the mezzanine annex. That means we need to work even harder to get folks to find us. NOTE: Artist must all ready have their own badges to the Comic-con.

- IF you are not able to come and draw at the table we would still love you to donate a drawing for our Fund Raiser. We can provided you with our sheet of card stalk at the convention and can even swing back to pick it up from your booth or table.

- IF you live in the Bay Area and are not able to make it to the convention and want to donate a drawing, contact Andrew at the email below and arrange to pick up the sheet to draw it on.

SO, if you are interested, email Andrew Farago at: gallery AT cartoonart DOT org and let him know who you are, when you might be available, and a URL to your artwork.

Thank you in advance for your support.
